The first artificial track was laid in the 1960’s, adjacent to the Cambridge Road, and was surfaced with animal hide. “Modern” waxed sand surfaces now make up the majority of the 15 artificial tracks available to trainers. Full details can be downloaded in Opening Times.
On Bury Side, the Al Bahathri Polytrack and Long Hill Polytrack, with a relatively steep climb towards its end, provide the main all-weather work gallops. The Polytrack and Mactrac tracks on Warren Hill run adjacent to each other and are 4½f in length, rising 132 feet from start to finish with 75% of that rise in the second half of each canter.
The 11f Cambridge Road Polytrack is the main artificial work gallop on Racecourse Side, with the Rubbing House Polytrack (9f) and Southfield Farm Round (6f) being very popular canters.
Both sides of the training grounds offer double trotting rings and three enclosed lunging rings each.
Artificial tracks close at 1pm each day to enable Jockey Club Estates staff to maintain them. All tracks are machined at least once a day and many of the busier tracks are machined during the mornings as well to reduce compaction and provide a fresh, level surface. For health and safety reasons, horses are prohibited from entering tracks while a maintenance pass is being carried out.
(Details of all-weather surfaces, distances and maintenace times can be downloaded from Opening Times).
