Turf Gallops - Flat and National Hunt

Mandown Gallops includes nearly 8 miles of turf gallops which play a major role in the final preparation of horses for races.

Three of the turf gallops, (the 8f Straight Mile, 6f Middle 100 Acres and the 4f Home Flat Gallop) are restricted to use by Flat horses only.

Turf Gallops open to horses of both disciplines include the  5f Far Side 100 Acres, the 16f Home Jump Gallop, 9f Mandown Bottom, 6f Face of the Hill, 8½f Back of the Hill and the 8½f Bowl, beloved of the legendary Fred Winter. Whilst available to both disciplines, many of these gallops would be considered too much for all but the toughest Flat horses.

Grass gallops, when open, are walked and repaired on a daily basis. Their location, at any particular time, is indicated by white markers which horses must stay between. New ‘fresh’ ground is provided by moving the markers when appropriate.

Details on open periods for each gallop can be found at Opening Times.

Turf gallops are closed in adverse weather conditions and details of which gallops are open can be viewed on the Lambourn Gallops Board.
