Facilities at Lambourn

Using the varying gradients of the Berkshire Downs to good advantage, Jockey Club Estates' Lambourn Training Grounds provide a wide array of training opportunities for National Hunt and Flat horses.

Turf gallops and schooling grounds are the choice of many trainers when ground conditions are perfect. However, artificial tracks offer an alternative when ground is either too firm or too soft, and are preferred by some trainers in any event. The Gallops Board on the website informs trainers which turf gallops are open.

As well as ensuring that horses always have a safe surface to train on, whatever the weather, the artificial tracks provide important practice for racing on the UK's all-weather tracks, and those overseas. Horses can move across the gallops safely on an increasingly extensive system of horsewalks.

The majority of the facilites are located on Mandown Gallops, situated to the north side of Upper Lambourn. However, Jockey Club Estates manages the 6f Fibresand Gallop off Folly Road (west of Lambourn), the 7.5f Long Hedge Gallop (east of Lambourn) and the 8f Polytrack at Kingsdown (north-west of Upper Lambourn). All these gallops are available to regular trainers.

Lambourn Training Grounds are maintained by an experienced team of staff known as Gallopsmen headed by Will Riggall.
