TRAINING ON THE TURF

Newmarket's 50 miles of turf gallops, on land which has not been ploughed since the 1660s, offer some of the best turf gallops in the world. Based on chalk, these gallops have been carefully maintained year in and year out for 300 years and are the yardstick by which turf racetracks and training centres throughout the world are measured.

There are different gallops at Newmarket to suit every horse at each stage of his or her career. Such is the variety of gallops that a trainer can prepare a horse for a race on a particular racecourse by working it on a similar piece of ground on the Heath. For example, trainers at Newmarket can work their horses the reverse way round the world-famous Limekilns Round gallop in order to accustom them to the bends at Epsom, the home of the English Derby. Almost all the turf gallops ensure that the horses work 'on the collar' with world famous gallops like Bury Hill, Long Hill, Warren Hill, and Side Hill rising substantially from start to finish.

Trainers and their horses have fresh ground to use each and every day of the year. It is a unique feature of the turf gallops at Newmarket that no ground used on a particular day will be returned to use for at least two years, the precious turf being given plenty of time to recover. Careful rotation, irrigation and maintenance all combine to ensure that the turf gallops at Newmarket remain the finest public gallops in the world.
