THE COFFEE ROOM
|
The Coffee Room is the oldest room in the Jockey Club. It stands on the site of the original Coffee Room, which was the Jockey Club's earliest meeting place in Newmarket. The alcoves, furnished with tables and leather upholstered settees, gave Members the privacy to lay their wagers and make up their betting books in years gone by. The Coffee Room also boasts a wonderful collection of silhouettes caricaturing Newmarket personalities of the past, which line the two longer sides of the room. Amongst other trophies and racing memorabilia is the Jockey Club Whip, adorned with the tail hairs of the great eighteenth century racehorse 'Eclipse'. The magnificent 'life size' bronze of the Derby winning horse 'Hyperion', bequeathed to the Jockey Club in 1996 by the late Lord Derby, now stands in the Jockey Club Courtyard outside the Coffee Room. The Coffee Room is now primarily used for presentations, meetings and larger dinner parties. It can hold a maximum of 100 people for a 'theatre style' meeting and is an elegant setting for both dinner parties and cocktail parties. |
