Gallops, turf or artificial, tend to be longer tracks where serious work is done.
Horses can canter and gallop on a Canter. However, horses are prohibited from cantering on a Gallop.

Other than Special Gallops, there is no booking procedure. Gallops and canters can be used at any time during opening hours. The exception to this is when maintenance is being carried out on artificial tracks (see Opening Times for further details).

Special Gallops are gallops which can only be used when prior permission has been given to the trainer by Jockey Club Estates. There are four Special Gallops in Newmarket. These are: the Golden Mile and the Round Gallop (both  of which are Peat Moss gallops on the Limekilns), the Waterhall Special Gallop and the Watered Gallop which runs parallel to the Rowley Mile Racecourse.

It is a Gallop which has had thin layers of peat spread on it in the autumn. On the peat moss gallops in Newmarket peat has been applied in most years for over a century. The peat is then worked in by nature over the winter to create six inch depth of peat-rich soil beneath the turf.  This produces extra cushioning and a safe, natural surface for fast work in dry conditions, when other ground has become too firm.

The charging system for use of the training grounds at Newmarket is known as Heath Tax.  It is paid by racehorse owners rather than their trainers.

All racehorses, who they are owned and trained by, are registered at Weatherbys.  Each month every trainer using the Heath is sent a list of horses in his care which he “returns” at the end of the month indicating which horses have or have not used the gallops.  Owners are then charged accordingly. 

All the facilities on the Heath are included in this charge with the exception of four “special” gallops - the Golden Mile Trial Ground and the Round Gallop (both peat moss) on the Limekilns, Water Hall Special Gallop (also on Bury Side) and the Watered Gallop (which is irrigated) on Racecourse Side.  These special gallops are charged on a per gallop basis.

Visiting trainers and permit holders based outside Newmarket (known as Casual Trainers) pay on a per visit basis.  Their use of the facilities is restricted to the Links and the Cambridge Road Polytrack only. Daily charges are known as Links Tax.

Charges are reviewed annually on 1 January following consultation with the Heath Committee. The Charges for 2012 are as follows:
